Is Kevin Durant’s New Deal with Warriors a Sign that He is Headed to LA Next Season?

NBA champion. 2-time NBA champion and Finals MVP Kevin Durant recently resigned with the Warriors. A contract is a 2-year contract with a player option next year for $30.5 million annually. One has to wonder, why does Durant continue to not only sign 1 and 1 contracts, and for that matter, below market value?

Durant is in the prime of his career and coming off 2 consecutive victories in the NBA Finals, while also winning Finals MVP. His addition to the Warriors has made them virtually invincible and has caused a mad scramble in the NBA with every team trying to construct a squad to beat them.

K.D made an unselfish move last year to provide the Warriors cap room to sign Steph Curry to a max deal and retain Andre Iguodala. This year he may be angling towards allow room to potentially sign Klay Thompson to a max contract as well.

Or maybe his reasoning is different. ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith reported before the start of free agency that LeBron James contacted Durant to gauge his interest in playing together in LA. Both parties denied the claims through their representatives but considering LeBron’s history of setting up moves well beforehand, it’s entirely possible Durant is allowing space for a transition.

Another reason this could be in play is because of the tension that has been reported recently between Steph and K.D. During the playoffs, it was noted that the finals were the first time they actually played together cohesively.

It would look strange for K.D to leave the Warriors after winning the Championship, but if the Warriors do not repeat as champions next year, that would be the perfect opportunity for Durant to jump ship and join LeBron in LA. Is it out of the question? Not at all, it has happened before.
