Recently, news reports broke from various media outlets that NBA superstar Kawhi Leonard has requested to be traded from the San Antonio Spurs. It has been reported by NBA insider Adrian Wojnarowski that Leonard prefers a trade that would send him to Los Angeles with the Lakers.
Kawhi’s troubles began earlier this season when the star forward suffered a calf injury. He returned to play in 9 games before apparently re-aggravating the injury.
There was a discrepancy between Kawhi’s camp and the Spurs brass on the recovery time for the injury, as a misdiagnosis of the injury came into question. This caused concern from Leonard’s team, leading them to seek a second opinion with a specialist outside of the Spurs organization.
Leonard eventually missed the entire season, which didn’t sit well with the Spurs. Media exchanges took place, which ultimately lead to Kawhi’s team making a public statement to the media that he is looking to be moved this summer.
As of yesterday, it was reported that the Cleveland Cavaliers have made calls to the Spurs in regards to what it would take to acquire the services of Leonard to pair with LeBron James. An acquisition of this magnitude would be huge for Cleveland, in hopes of retaining James and keeping the Cavs title chase alive.
Reports have surfaced on Twitter and Bleacher Report that so far the Spurs have indicated to the Cavs that talks would start with the #8 overall pick in the draft and Cavaliers All-Star forward Kevin Love. Cleveland in return has reportedly offered the pick and starting center Tristan Thompson along with a role player.
Cleveland also has been involved in discussions with the Memphis Grizzlies for the #4 overall pick and Chandler Parsons. It has been widely reported that the Grizzlies are willing to part with the 4th pick if a team is willing to take on Parsons contract.
It is also, possible that the Cavs are discussing a 3 team deal as well with the Spurs and Grizzlies to bring Kawhi to Cleveland. It seems like a long shot for Leonard to be headed to Cleveland, but the Cavs are actively working the phones in an attempt to make a major move.
